About Pakistan

The Mountain Company has been organising trekking groups in Pakistan for the last six years and the overwhelming feedback we receive is how incredibly hospitable, friendly and generous the people of Pakistan behave towards tourists visiting their country.

Clearly in some parts of Pakistan there are political and security concerns however our principal consideration when we organise and plan our trips in Pakistan is the safety of our clients. We believe that for most of Pakistan and especially Northern Areas where our treks take place the present risk is low. We keep in close contact with the British High Commission in Islamabad as well as reading the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) travel advice to Pakistan.

Pakistan came into existence as a country during the partition of British India in 1947. Later on Pakistan became an Islamic Republic with the adoption of its constitution in 1956. Pakistan was home to ancient civilisations in the Indus Valley rivalling those of Egypt and Mesopotamia and was also the crucible of two of the world’s major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism.

In North Pakistan three great mountain ranges all meet: the Himalayas, Hindu Kush and Karakoram. Our treks take place in the Karakoram that borders China and India located in the Northern Area’s regions of Baltistan and Hunza. In these places the mountains dominate the skyline with mountain streams and rivers having eroded steep gorges and the hardy people from the scattered villages farm the irrigated fields. Karakoram has the greatest concentration of the world’s big peaks including four over 8000m: K2, Broad Peak and Gasherbrum 1 & 2.

The trekking season for Karakoram is in the summer due to the area not being influenced by the monsoon to the same extent as Nepal and most of India. The season begins at the end of May and continues on to mid October however the best time for Snow Lake and Hispar La is July and for K2 & Gondogoro La is August.
