BURMA

ABOUT BURMA

Myanmar is the official name of the country formerly known as Burma. With a landscape covered in many Buddhist temples and shrines, Burma is often known as the land of the golden pagodas. The scenery is beautiful and varied from the Himalayan mountains in the north through the lush, green plains down to the sandy beaches along the Indian Ocean.

After visiting the former capital city of Yangon there are some exquisite sights in Burma from Bagan’s plain of a thousand temples, the fishermen of Inle Lake, and the gold stupa of Yangon’s Shwedagon Pagoda. Beyond these three major cultural destinations there are other places to visit in Burma such as the old British hill stations of Pyin Oo Lwin and Kalaw; hill trekking in the Chin State and Shan State. There is also more challenging Himalayan trekking in the north starting from the remote town of Putao in Kachin State.
