Rodung La with Merak and Sakten- GHT

Rodung La trail through Merak and Sakten was the most important trade route to eastern Bhutan until the road was built. This 17 day trek has varied scenery throughout with superb mountain views of the eastern Himalaya range.

The route can also be seen as an extension of the Lunana Snowman trek ending in Bumthang. The combination of the two of them, Snowman and Rodung La trek, connects the country from the west (Paro) to the far east (Trashi Yangtse) and is now part of The Great Himalaya Trail ("GHT").

Bhutanese government opened up Merak Sakten in 2010 and so far very few trekking groups have visited this remote region in Eastern Bhutan. The people living in Merak Sakten area are semi-nomadic Drokpas, they speak a different dialect, have their own deities and wear a unique style of dress. They wear shamo hats which are black, yak-hair berets boasting five spidery tentacles designed to draw away the rain.
